CAS Certification recognizes a person’s ability to perform as program staff in a community alcohol/drug program. Certification does not qualify a person to engage in private practice.
Qualifications for Certification

Must be over 18 years of age

Must be presently employed or serving in a volunteer capacity in a social model program, or must have been employed or serving in a volunteer capacity in a social model program within the last full year prior to the filing date

If the applicant is an alcoholic or an addict, must have one (1) year of continuous sobriety
-
Must have a minimum of 2080 hours work experience within three years in a social model alcohol and or other drug recovery program. This work service requirement can be either direct or indirect program functions as paid or volunteer service

Must provide a written self-assessment and sign the CAS Code of Ethics

Must demonstrate, by standardized multiple choice examination, one’s understanding of and ability to work in a community social model setting and to meet the minimum standards as defined in the Scope of Practice

The applicant will have completed the 155 hours (effective April 1, 2010 the education requirement will be 270 hours) of a qualifying Educational Component (call for details) and passed a written comprehensive CAS examination

Must document a minimum of 160 hours of closely supervised on-the-job training (practicum) in direct alcohol and or other drug recovery services in a social model setting.
Annual Renewal Requirements

Document 30 hours of continuing education in alcohol or drug studies including 3 hours of ethics and confidentiality (2 hours ethics, 1 hour confidentiality)

Submit a new signed Code of Conduct

Payment of Annual Certification dues.
